Friends of the Peak District

Most famous for its Crooked Spire, Chesterfield is Derbyshire's biggest town and home to an open market that's been a regular, and lively, feature for almost 850 years!

Equidistant from either coast, located on the main railway route from Leeds to London and only a few miles from the M1 motorway, Chesterfield can lay claim to be a truly central English town, handily placed for easy access to Chatsworth House and the Peak District National Park, 4 miles west, and Sherwood Forest a little further to the east.

Boasting a league football club in Chesterfield FC - nicknamed The Spireites for obvious reasons - and also hosting the occasional county cricket match in Queen's Park, Chesterfield has emerged from its industrial past with an award-winning town centre shopping area and is a growing and popular town, well loved by locals and visitors alike.

The many attractions in the town and surrounding area include the famous Royal Oak 'in't Shambles' as a local might say; reputedly one of the oldest pubs in the country. Linacre Reservoir is a 200 ace woodland on the outskirts of the town well worth a visit for keen bird watchers, walkers and cyclists.

Chesterfield is probably most widely known, if not for the market, then certainly for the Crooked Spire, the 14th century church with a 228-foot, twisted pinnacle. The symbol of the Crooked Spire of the Church of St Mary and All Saints is synonymous with Chesterfield. Finished in 1360, it is the largest church in Derbyshire and can be seen from all around Chesterfield and, at night, is fog-lit to dramatic effect.
